Frequently Asked Questions
Where does your data come from?
Our school performance data is sourced from the US News & World Report annual Best High Schools rankings and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). We aggregate up to 12 years of data (2012–2026) to show performance trends that single-year snapshots miss.
How often is the data updated?
We update our database when new annual rankings are published, typically once per year. Our data pipeline validates each update against historical records to ensure consistency and catch any extraction errors.
Is my school missing or showing incorrect data?
If a school is missing from our database, it may not be included in the US News rankings (which cover approximately 17,000+ ranked schools). If you notice incorrect data for a listed school, please email [email protected] with the school name, the metric that appears wrong, and the correct value if you know it. We investigate every report.
Can I use your data for research or reporting?
Yes, we support education research and journalism. Please contact us at [email protected] describing your use case, and we can discuss data access, attribution requirements, and any available API access for researchers.
How are city scores calculated?
Our composite city scores use a GreatSchools-inspired algorithm that weights three factors: academic performance (state rank percentile, 60%), graduation rate outcomes (20%), and ranking data coverage quality (20%). Scores range from 0–100 and are grouped into tiers from "Exceptional" (80–100) to "Needs Improvement" (0–19).
We typically respond within 2–3 business days. For urgent data corrections that affect school representations, we prioritize faster review.
